Braces What is Orthodontic Treatment?Orthodontic treatment or commonly known as braces treatment is a treatment focused on correcting teeth and facial irregularities. The result of orthodontic treatment is a dramatic beautiful smile, stable and improved dental health and enhances quality of life for many people of all ages. Teeth and facial irregularities known as malocclusion (bad bite) could result from genetic and environmental factors. Malocclusion (bad bite) of teeth is a misalignment problem that can lead to serious oral health complications. Bad bite is when there is a difference in the size of the top and bottom jaw. When the upper jaw is bigger than the lower jaw, it is called an overbite. When the lower jaw is bigger, it is called underbite. When teeth are crooked because of inadequate jaw space, it is known as overcrowding. Teeth are not able to perform vital functions if they are misaligned. Most people with mild malocclusion will not require any treatment.    At what age should braces treatment be started?This is the most common question our doctor received during the last seven year providing braces treatment for adults and children. The treatment could start at any age as soon as a problem is detected. The American Association of Orthodontist recommends a child should have an orthodontic evaluation at the age of seven. At this age, issues such as uneven bite, overcrowding, underbite and/ or damage by oral habits will become apparent. Starting the process early does not mean a child will get braces right away. It just means the doctor would be able to detect any potential problem early and decide the best time to start treatment. What are the benefits of starting treatment early in children?Early detection and the treatment of malocclusion of teeth in children will reduce the duration of treatment, and also make it less expensive. In some cases, early treatment can help avoid extractions (removal of adult teeth) or a large problem that requires jaw surgery as the means for correcting malocclusion in adulthood. Adults can also get good results, however treatment for adults will generally take longer and will be more expensive. The earlier you treat malocclusion, the better the outcome. How much do braces cost?The costs for braces treatment varies depending on how severe the bad bite is and the time required treating it. Treatment typically lasts from 6-36 months. Proper diagnosis requires taking x-rays and photos, which enable the doctor to make informative decisions about the form of treatment necessary.
